At the time of my original visit the gorillas were at risk of extinction due to poaching as a form of income for locals. During the twenty years a new scheme was created where these poachers are now protectors and guardians of the gorillas, utilising tourism by exhibiting traditions of Rwandan culture. Whilst this gorilla guardian must have experienced something of the genocide he exudes a warmth and joy which echoed throughout the country.
